MOKHTAR SAMBA

World-renowned drummer and percussionist Mokhtar Samba was born to a Moroccan mother and a Senegalese father. From a young age he played at Moroccan weddings and was immersed in the sound of African percussion  a passion that shaped his entire musical journey.

MOKHTAR SAMBA

Mokhtar a drummer and percussionist of Moroccan and Senegalese origin has performed with some of the world’s most prestigious musicians including Joe Zawinul Jaco Pastorius Youssou N’Dour Mariah Carey Patti Smith Carlos Santana the National French Jazz Orchestra Carlinhos Brown Eddy Louiss Jean-Luc Ponty and Manu Dibango to name just a few.

From his early work with Hamsa Music to the legendary group Ultramarine (alongside Etienne M’Bappé Mario Canonge and N’Guyen Lê among others) Mokhtar has consistently shown himself to be a passionate yet inventive explorer. Through innovative sounds and imaginative fusions he has displayed a multifaceted talent that bridges Western harmonies African rhythms and Bedouin melodies. His tireless pursuit is a search for a “musical Grail”: music without borders. His ability to elevate cultural heritage into a universal language resonates with listeners everywhere.

Strong Mandinka influences also shine through in Mokhtar’s music shaped by his collaborations with Salif Keita Kanté Manfila Ousmane Kouyaté and Cheikh Tidiane Seck. In his work the shimmering arpeggios of the kora and the haunting melodies of desert nomads intertwine with jazz improvisation enriching the songbook of this remarkable drummer.

Musical Roots

Mokhtar Samba was born to a Moroccan mother and a Senegalese father. As a child he played percussion at Moroccan weddings and was deeply shaped by traditional African sounds.

Musical Education​

At the age of twelve he moved to France where he taught himself to play drums. He later studied at the Fontenay sous Bois Conservatory with Guy Lefebvre learning music theory and solfege.

Career Beginnings

He began his professional career in 1977 by performing in Normandy and working with artists like Viviane Reed and Lavelle. These early experiences helped shape his open and diverse musical style.

Paris and Musical Fusion

In the 1980s he became part of the African music scene in Paris. This rich artistic community inspired a new kind of music that mixed African rhythms Western harmonies Bedouin chants and Caribbean energy.

Collaborations

Mokhtar has performed with global icons including Joe Zawinul Jaco Pastorius Youssou N'Dour Carlos Santana Manu Dibango and Richard Bona. His ability to bridge styles and cultures has made him one of the most respected drummers in world music.

Band Projects

He played in Hamsa Music with Richard Raux and in the legendary Ultramarine group alongside Etienne M'Bappé Mario Canonge and N'Guyen Lê. With his own band Nayal he continues to explore new sounds and musical forms.

Musical Inspiration

His style is heavily inspired by Mandingue traditions and his experiences with artists like Salif Keita Kante Manfila and Cheikh Tidiane Seck. His music reflects the beauty of the kora Sahelian melodies and jazz improvisation.
